The Surface Explained

What Is A Resin Bound Driveway?

A resin bound driveway is made by mixing natural aggregate — gravel, quartz or marble — with a clear UV-stable resin, then hand-trowelling it over a solid base to create a smooth, seamless surface. The result is a driveway with the texture of natural stone and none of the loose chippings, weeds or joints that come with gravel or block paving.

Because the finished surface is porous, rainwater drains straight through rather than pooling or running onto the road. That makes resin driveways fully SuDS compliant, which is why they usually don't need planning permission for front gardens.

Resin Bound vs Resin Bonded

Resin bound mixes the stone through the resin for a smooth, permeable finish. Resin bonded scatters stone onto a layer of resin, leaving a rougher, non-permeable surface that can shed loose stone over time. We install resin bound systems — the longer-lasting of the two. For a deeper explanation, read our guide: what is resin bound surfacing?

Why Resin

The Benefits Of A Resin Driveway.

Resin bound surfacing has become one of the UK's most popular driveway choices — and for good reason. Here's what it gives you that other surfaces don't.

01

Permeable & SuDS Compliant

Rainwater drains naturally through the surface, preventing puddles and flooding. Fully compliant with planning rules for front driveways — no extra drainage works needed.

02

Low Maintenance

No loose stones, no weeds pushing through joints, no re-sanding. An occasional sweep and jet wash is all a resin driveway needs to stay looking new.

03

Built To Last

A properly installed resin bound driveway will comfortably last 15–25 years. Ours come with a 10-year warranty as standard.

04

UV-Stable Colours

We use UV-stable resins that resist fading and yellowing, with a wide range of aggregate blends to suit both modern and traditional homes.

05

Seamless, Smooth Finish

One continuous surface with no joints or trip edges — safe underfoot, easy for prams and wheelchairs, and clean lines from edge to edge.

06

Adds Kerb Appeal & Value

A resin driveway transforms the front of a property. It's one of the most cost-effective ways to lift a home's appearance and add real value.

How It Works

Our Resin Driveway Installation Process.

01

Site Survey & Quote

We visit your property, take measurements, talk through colours and edging options, and provide a detailed written quote. No hidden costs, no pressure.

02

Groundwork & Base

The existing surface is excavated where needed and a solid, properly compacted base is laid. This is the stage that decides how long a driveway lasts — we never rush it.

03

Mixing & Laying

Your chosen aggregate is mixed with UV-stable resin on site and hand-trowelled to a smooth, seamless finish, with neat edges and clean detailing throughout.

04

Curing & Aftercare

The surface is ready to walk on within hours and drive on in 1–2 days. We leave the site tidy and your driveway covered by our 10-year warranty.

Cost & Value

How Much Does A Resin Driveway Cost?

Every driveway is different, so we price every job individually rather than working from a rate card. The main factors are the size of the area, the condition of the existing base, edging and drainage requirements, and your choice of aggregate.

Resin costs more than basic tarmac upfront, but with no loose stone to manage, no weeds and virtually no maintenance, it usually works out better value over its lifespan. We'll always give you honest advice on whether your existing base can be overlaid or needs a full dig-out — it can make a real difference to the price.

The quickest way to get an accurate figure is a free site survey. We'll measure up, talk through options and give you a written quote — usually the same week.

Ask Us Anything
How long does a resin driveway last?

A properly installed resin bound driveway will typically last 15 to 25 years. The key is the preparation, a solid, well-compacted base and UV-stable resin. Cheaper systems yellow and go brittle within a few winters, usually because the resin was not UV stable or the base underneath was never right. That lifespan is a big part of why resin driveways UK-wide have overtaken block paving on new installs.

We lay BBA-approved systems over a properly dug and compacted sub-base, and every resin driveway we install comes with a 10-year written guarantee.

Do I need planning permission for a resin driveway?

Normally, no. A resin bound driveway is permeable and SuDS compliant, so it falls under permitted development for front driveways. The rules tighten if you are paving over five square metres or more with a surface that does not drain, altering a listed building, or need a new dropped kerb, which is a separate council application. We check all of this at the free site survey. There are some exceptions, so read our full guide on driveway planning permission in Manchester.

How long does installation take?

Resin driveways are generally completed in 3 to 5 days depending on size and how much groundwork is needed. The bulk of that time goes on the dig-out, sub-base and edging rather than the resin itself. If a new base is required, it needs to cure before we lay, which adds a day or two. The resin surface is usually walkable within hours and ready to drive on in 1 to 2 days.

What's the difference between resin bound and resin bonded?

Resin bound mixes the aggregate through the resin before laying, creating a smooth, permeable, hard-wearing surface. Resin bonded scatters stone over a resin layer, which isn't permeable and can shed loose stone over time. That difference matters for drainage and planning, because only a bound surface is SuDS compliant. Bonded is cheaper to lay but tends to need topping up and can pool water in heavy rain. Every resin driveway we install is a bound system. You can read our full comparison of resin bound vs resin bonded for a closer look at cost, lifespan and drainage.

How do I maintain a resin driveway?

Very easily. An occasional sweep and a jet wash once or twice a year is all it takes. A resin bound driveway has no joints for weeds to grow through and no loose stone to top up. Moss can appear on shaded north-facing sections, but it lifts with a stiff brush and a diluted patio cleaner. Keep the drainage points clear and avoid dragging skips or metal ramps across the surface. Our guide on how resin handles Manchester's weather covers frost and drainage in more detail.

Can resin be laid over my existing driveway?

Sometimes. If your existing concrete or tarmac base is solid and free of movement, driveway resurfacing is often an option, which reduces cost and installation time. We check for cracking, rocking slabs, oil contamination and standing water first, because resin laid over a failing base will move with it. If it's cracked or unstable, we'll recommend a full dig-out before the resin driveway goes down. We'll give you an honest answer at the free site survey.

Do you install resin driveways in my area?

We cover Greater Manchester, Cheshire and Salford, with dedicated pages for Manchester, Altrincham, Stockport, Wilmslow, Bramhall, Bury, Macclesfield and Ashton. We're based in Wythenshawe and have been installing resin driveways across the region since 2016, so we're rarely more than half an hour from the yard. If your postcode falls just outside those areas, call us anyway on 0161 399 0351 and we'll tell you honestly whether we can get to you.

What happens when I book a free site survey?

One of us visits at a time that suits you, measures the area, checks the existing base, levels and drainage, and talks through resin driveway designs, colours, edging and access. It usually takes under an hour and you don't need to prepare anything. If resin isn't the right fit for your property, we'll say so and talk you through the alternatives, including imprinted concrete. You'll then get a written quote, normally within a couple of days, with no obligation and no sales pressure.

What resin colours and aggregate blends can I choose from?

Every resin bound driveway we install uses UV-stable blends, from light golden and buff tones through to mid greys, silvers and near blacks. Lighter blends suit red brick and brighten a shaded frontage, while greys work well with rendered or modern properties. Most resin driveway designs come down to three choices: the blend, the edging and whether you want a border or inlay to break up a larger area.

We bring samples to your site survey so you can hold them against your brickwork in daylight before deciding. Our gallery shows completed Manchester and Cheshire driveways in our best-selling finishes.

Can you install a resin driveway in winter?

Yes, though the weather sets the pace. A resin bound driveway needs a dry, frost-free base to cure properly, so we work to the forecast and will reschedule rather than lay in poor conditions. Ground temperature matters more than air temperature, and we won't start if the base is holding moisture. The upside is that winter slots are usually quicker to book than summer ones. Our guide on winter driveway installs explains what to expect.
