The Surface Explained

What Is Imprinted Concrete?

Imprinted concrete is a stylish and durable paving solution that transforms ordinary concrete into a beautiful, textured surface. Imprinting concrete patterns that replicate the look of natural materials like stone, brick, or tiles will add a sophisticated touch to your outdoor space.

Imprinted concrete is perfect for driveways, patios and walkways. The ever changing and unpredictable weather doesn’t need to be a concern when opting for an imprinted concrete driveway due to the ideal combination of both strength and low maintenance. With its many eye-catching design options and long-lasting durability, it’s a great choice for enhancing your property’s appearance while maintaining its functionality. Imprinted concrete also resists cracking and requires minimal upkeep, ensuring a lasting and attractive finish for years to come.

Why Imprinted Concrete

The Benefits Of Imprinted Concrete For Your Driveway.

Imprinted concrete offers many benefits that make it a top choice for outdoor surfaces. Fast becoming one of the UK’s most popular choices for outdoor surfaces, imprinted concrete is extremely durable and will stand up to the harshest of weather without showing signs of wear. Unlike other paving options, it resists cracking and requires minimal upkeep, saving you time and money in the long run. Let’s face it you don’t want to be forking out for a driveway twice!

01

Customisable Designs

One of the most appealing factors is the customisable patterns. These allow you to achieve the look of expensive materials like stone or brick but at only a fraction of the cost. Imprinted concrete also provides a seamless surface, preventing weeds from growing through and making it easier to clean.

02

Durable & Easy To Clean

Any surface that has imprinted concrete is not only built to last, it is also very easy to clean. A simple sweep and jet wash will do the job. Natural drainage capabilities of imprinted concrete help reduce standing water, making it a practical and attractive solution for any outdoor space.

Making The Choice

Is Imprinted Concrete Right For You?

Imprinted concrete is the perfect choice if you want a highly durable, low-maintenance surface that adds visual appeal to your home. It’s ideal for driveways, patios and walkways. Offering a range of options that suit various styles, you can go with anything from a subtle neutral colour design to a bold eye-catching design — check out our gallery for some examples.

If one of your key factors is a long-lasting, cost-effective solution that resists wear, cracking and weeds then imprinted concrete could be the perfect fit. Its seamless finish also promotes natural drainage, reducing the risk of standing water that can become an issue with other driveways.

Adding value to your home is pretty much a certainty when adding an imprinted concrete surface to your outdoor area, specifically a driveway. Knowing the surface is not only stylish but heavy duty it tends to tick the box of anybody looking to buy a new property.

Common Questions

Imprinted Concrete FAQs.

The questions homeowners ask us most about pattern imprinted concrete. Can't find yours? Give us a call and we'll happily talk it through.

Call Us Now
Is imprinted concrete slippery when wet?

No. The imprinting process presses a texture into the whole slab rather than laying a smooth finish, so grip is built into the surface from the start. The final sealant is then applied with an anti-slip additive, which keeps that traction in place through the wet Manchester winters our surfaces have to handle.

Properly finished imprinted concrete gives grip comparable to natural stone paving. If your driveway slopes or sits in permanent shade, mention it when we visit and we'll increase the additive in the sealant coat.

Will the colour fade over time?

The colour in a coloured concrete driveway is worked through the surface layer rather than painted on top, so it doesn't strip back the way a coating does. What changes over the years is the sealant sitting above it. Weather, tyre traffic and general grime dull that protective layer, and the colour underneath starts to look flat and tired as a result. A clean and reseal lifts it back close to how it looked on day one, and it's a job we handle for customers across Greater Manchester and Cheshire.

How often does imprinted concrete need resealing?

Typically every 2-4 years, depending on how much foot and vehicle traffic the surface takes. Imprinted concrete driveways usually come round sooner than an imprinted concrete patio, simply because they carry vehicle weight every day rather than the odd table and chairs.

Resealing keeps the colour rich, seals the surface against oil and leaf staining, and renews the anti-slip finish at the same time. It's a straightforward, low-cost job set against the price of replacing a worn surface, and it's part of the aftercare we walk every customer through on handover.

Will my imprinted concrete driveway crack?

Properly installed imprinted concrete driveways are highly crack-resistant, and the reason sits below what you can see. We excavate and compact a proper sub-base before any concrete is poured, then lay fibre-reinforced concrete over it so the slab holds together under load.

Crack-control joints are cut in to absorb the natural movement in the ground through freeze and thaw cycles, and those joints are worked into the imprinted pattern so they read as part of the design rather than a repair line. Where a driveway needs levelling or drainage work first, our groundworks team sorts that before the pour.

How long does installation take?

An imprinted concrete driveway is typically installed in 3-5 days, depending on the size of the area and how much groundwork is needed underneath. A straightforward replacement over a sound base moves faster than a job that needs excavation, drainage or edging built in from scratch.

The pour and imprinting itself happens in a single day, and the days either side cover preparation and finishing. Once the slab has dried out properly we return to apply the final sealant, and that return visit can shift by a few days if the weather turns.

When can I walk and park on my new driveway?

You can usually walk on imprinted concrete after 24-48 hours. We ask that vehicles stay off for around a week so the slab reaches proper strength before it takes any weight, and we'll agree parking arrangements with you before we start so nobody is caught out. Skips, building materials and heavy plants should wait longer still.

It's a short wait against a surface that will last decades, and driving on green concrete is one of the few things that genuinely shortens its life.

Do I need planning permission for an imprinted concrete driveway?

Because imprinted concrete is not a permeable surface, any front concrete driveway in the UK over 5 square metres needs suitable drainage to stay within permitted development rules. That means directing rainwater to a lawn, border, soakaway or channel drain rather than letting it run onto the road. Where the adjoining lawn or borders need reworking to take that water, our landscaping team handles it alongside the driveway.

We design the correct drainage into every installation as standard, so planning permission usually isn't required for the work we carry out. Rear gardens and patios generally fall outside these rules entirely. Read our full guide on Driveway Planning Permission In Manchester for how this applies to your property.

Is imprinted concrete more expensive than block paving?

Installed professionally, imprinted concrete usually lands in a similar price bracket to block paving, and it tends to work out better value across its lifetime. There are no joints for weeds to push through, no individual blocks to sink or shift, and no annual re-sanding to budget for, so an imprinted concrete driveway avoids much of the ongoing maintenance cost other surfaces build up. If you're weighing it against a resin bound driveway as well, we're happy to price both so you can compare properly. Every quote we issue is free and in writing.

Can you change the colour of imprinted concrete?

Yes, and there are two routes depending on how far you want to go. The surface colour of an existing coloured concrete driveway can be shifted by cleaning it back and applying a tinted sealant in a new shade, which suits a faded driveway or one that no longer matches a new extension or window frames.

That's a resurfacing job rather than a rebuild, so it's quicker and cheaper. Changing the colour through the concrete itself means relaying the slab, since the pigment runs through the material rather than sitting on it. We'll show you samples of both and talk through what each involves before you commit to anything.

How long does imprinted concrete take to dry?

Imprinted concrete is firm enough to walk on within 24-48 hours, though full curing takes around a week before the slab is ready for vehicles. Drying and curing are two different things: the surface goes hard fairly quickly, but the concrete carries on gaining strength underneath for some time afterwards.

We return to apply the final sealant once the slab has dried out properly, which can add a few days in colder or wetter spells. Imprinted concrete driveways laid through summer generally reach that stage faster than ones laid over a North West winter, and we'll give you firm dates as the job progresses.
